The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) Research and Impact from a Gender Perspective: A Bibliometric Analysis in the IS Discipline
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to examine the landscape of Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG5) publications within the Information Systems (IS) discipline and assess the impact of these studies. The study also aims to highlight the role of leading authors’ gender (female) in driving SDG5 research and to address the gap in understanding how the academic world of IS emphasizes gender equality.
Number of Papers Analyzed and International Scope: The study analyzes a total of 37,083 papers published in 2023, out of which 1,064 (2.87%) were related to SDG5 topics, and 351 papers (0.85%) focused exclusively on SDG5. The dataset was collected from Elsevier’s Scopus (SciVal) database, focusing on publications from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong, thereby giving the study an international scope.
Problem of SDG5: The study points out the problem of SDG5 by revealing that the IS discipline is less attentive to SDG5 topics. It highlights that while female scholars tend to publish more SDG5 studies, their impact on the academic community is less recognized compared to their male counterparts. The study exposes gender disparities in scientific activeness and performance, indicating that women are underrepresented but contribute more to SDG5 topics, yet receive fewer citations and less recognition.
Contribution to the Field: This study contributes to the field by providing an updated understanding of IS scholars’ contributions to SDG5 studies using a large dataset across multiple regions. Also, it Incorporates a gender perspective to reveal significant gender differences in scientific activeness and performance in SDG5 research. More than that, this study also provides suggestions like policy implications, the use of social media.
