Our Open-Access article, “Ethical issues and unintended consequences of digitalization and platformization” has been published in Journal of Information Technology . In this special issue, we explore the negative externalities and unintended consequences of disruptive digital innovations. We examine how these innovations can lead to job losses, negative health impacts, and erosion of traditional values, emphasizing the need for ethical scrutiny of algorithms. The issue includes papers that analyze the impacts of digital platforms, blockchain, and autonomous systems, highlighting social, environmental, and economic implications. We also discuss political manipulation and misuse of information systems, illustrating cases with Elon Musk’s actions on the X platform. Our contributions aim to provide solutions for mitigating the adverse effects of technological innovations and promote a critical view of digital transformation.
